Say Less
Quality > Quantity
Clear brand strategy is about the quality, not quantity, of your messages.
When I share market research with schools, someone in the room almost always says, “There are no surprises here.”
Priority Matters
The surprise to most schools is that they need to stop saying so much.
What the market research most often reveals is too much. Too many messages, too many attempts to be everything to everyone. The result is a brand perception that’s misty. No one can tell what you’re really about, who you are for. And yet I’ve never met an independent school that claims to be everything for everyone.
The real work begins in prioritizing what they say about themselves.
The Work is in the Restraint
The fix isn’t more. It’s less. To stand out among the schools families are considering, it takes focus and clarity.
Find out what your market values. Ask whether your school delivers on those things. Then, talk about those top three things that the market values most and that you deliver well: first, often, and last. Discipline and repetition bring brand clarity.
Chances are, those top three things aren’t how your community currently talks about your school. And there are always a lot of tears on the cutting room floor.
That’s the hard part. Simple is hard. Boldly representing your brand means choosing what not to say.
Say less.
Say it consistently.
The restraint will do the work.
