Most, if not all, schools lay claim to being “in pursuit of excellence,” yet the range of how each school defines “excellence” is vast.
And the next sentence is most often, “This is a place to take risks, try something new, a safe place to fail.”
This is a beautiful, audacious goal, the beginning of the articulation of the “why” — “why your school?”
Are you prepared to answer the follow-up question, “What does excellence look like here?” The answer to this is what parents seek to understand. How is excellence different here and how will your version of excellence better benefit their child?
Families choose schools when they understand how your school best delivers the benefits they seek. This is what differentiates schools.
There are lots of ways to deliver “excellence” and there are students and families who value them all. Articulate your take. Own your position. Message your school’s unique take on excellence clearly, or the market will do it for you.
I think of the pursuit of excellence as “getting schooled.” Isn’t that what “a safe place to take risks” means? It connotes a growth mindset, a place for empathy, appreciation, and connection so that the a-ha moment can happen time and again. There is nothing trivial about this kind of pursuit.
