The Story Behind StoryScape: Why We Focus on Authenticity and Insight
At the recent AISNE Head of School Retreat, someone asked me about StoryScape’s origin story.
There are many moments that led me here, but one stands out—a moment that perfectly captures how my past experiences came together with a clear vision for the future of StoryScape.
Before spending the past decade focused on education, I was the Global Director of Marketing for an environmental nonprofit founded by Patagonia. At the conclusion of that role, I was invited to speak to students at the Harvard Extension School on Sustainability Marketing and Communications. I eagerly (and nervously) accepted.
Now, while my time at Loomis Chaffee and Rumsey Hall instilled all the outcomes private schools focus on to this day—confidence, advocacy, and a commitment to something bigger than myself—I still needed a solid power pose before stepping into that room.
I knew one thing for sure: I couldn’t outsmart this audience—but I could outstory them.
The Power of Storytelling Over Information
Rather than filling the hour with information they could Google—like an overview of the triple bottom line—I focused on lived experiences. I shared real stories from my work with mission-driven businesses and their nonprofit partners. Through case studies and personal anecdotes, the session flew by—and dare I say, was even fun.
That moment stuck with me and clarified StoryScape’s “why”: Share experiences that resonate to deeply engage those already interested, and to capture the attention of those who aren’t yet in the know.
The Intersection of Authenticity and Insight
What I emphasized in that talk is the same principle I bring to my work with schools:
Great messaging lives at the intersection of authenticity and insight.
- Authenticity is what is true and held close by your internal community.
- Insight is what is most valued by your external market.
This intersection is where the magic happens—it’s the foundation of powerful conversations, compelling storytelling, and word-of-mouth marketing that actually works. Stories that speak to your audiences’ needs resonate.
When schools align messaging with this strategy, they equip their communities to tell stories that drive interest and increase enrollment. And just like in sustainable business, a shared narrative unites and empowers a community to move not just needles—but mountains.
How StoryScape Helps Schools Get There
At StoryScape, we focus on this alignment through three proven services:
- Market Research – Understanding how your school is perceived.
- Messaging Hierarchy – Clarifying what to emphasize in marketing.
- Word-of-Mouth Training – Helping your community tell stories that work.
Why This Work Matters
At the root of every strong brand is clarity and alignment.
Brand is who you are. And like a tree with deep, strong roots, a well-defined brand is both healthy and resilient—able to thrive and weather any storm.
At StoryScape, we help schools articulate their brand—the best of who they are—in a way that resonates with the people they most want to reach. Because when you tell the right stories, families listen.
