Starting the School Year Off Strong

I’ve had some conversations recently with schools that have invested significantly in brand projects, that have paid “a billion dollars” for a brand platform to agencies that work across multiple industries. These agencies may know how to market high-end products, but when families choose a school, they’re making a decision about their child’s future — not purchasing a luxury item.

When agencies don’t specialize in marketing independent schools, the brand platforms often include words like:

  • Warm and Welcoming
  • Small Class Sizes
  • Inclusive
  • Authentic
  • Community

Sound familiar? If these words are central to your brand platform, you are missing an opportunity.

Here’s the thing

These descriptors, while true, apply to virtually every independent school. They represent what parents expect as a baseline, not what makes your school uniquely compelling. When your messaging focuses on category benefits rather than your school’s specific value proposition, you might successfully convince families to consider independent education, but you’re not necessarily drawing them to your school.

Think of it this way

“Warm and welcoming” meets standard expectations in our world. Every school cultivates community. The question becomes: what makes your community special? What’s the specific culture, approach, or philosophy that sets you apart, that makes you stand out?

I get it. When agencies from other sectors encounter independent schools for the first time, they’re genuinely impressed — both by individual schools and by the category as a whole. You are all dazzling! That enthusiasm can lead them to build platforms around what makes independent schools different from public education, rather than what makes your school different from other independent schools.

The opportunity cost here is real. When significant budget goes toward generic positioning, those resources aren’t available for the deeper work of uncovering and articulating your school’s distinctive strengths.

The good news?

There are consultants and agencies that deeply understand the independent school landscape — some who either transitioned from other industries and invested time learning yours, or who have personal and professional roots in independent education. Those with genuine expertise can help you move beyond category descriptors and generic positioning to identify the specific, authentic differentiators that resonate with your ideal families. Those qualities that make you exceptional and deeply benefit the children of mission-aligned families.
