It’s Time to Relaunch Your School Website

Rebranding, Redesigning, Relaunching, Redoing Your Independent School’s Website? It’s time to rethink the process.

Website redesigns can be both exhilarating and daunting, especially when they’re seen as the solution to big, pressing questions like:

  • How do we increase enrollment?
  • How do we attract mission-aligned families for admissions?
  • How do we create the best marketing campaigns that truly resonate?

And often, the response is: It’s time to redo the website.

Fair enough—many school websites are overdue for a refresh. We’ve seen plenty that could work harder and smarter at differentiating the school and meeting families where they are through the admissions journey.

But here’s the catch: If you jump straight into redesigning your website without a solid strategy, you’re wasting precious resources. It’s like throwing good money after bad or letting the tail wag the dog.

The Key to a Website That Works? Strategy First.

A website redesign isn’t just a chance to update aesthetics or fix broken links—it’s an opportunity to transform how your school shows up in the world. But to seize that opportunity, you need to start with foundational work.

With the right groundwork, you’ll not only create a better website—you’ll also lay the foundation for stronger marketing campaigns, better word-of-mouth buzz and referrals, and long-term success in attracting mission-aligned families.

So, before diving into design and development, pause and consider the big picture.

Back to Basics: Lessons From the Early Days of Websites

Back in 2000, when websites were still a new frontier, I worked as an Information Architect for a major advertising agency, building digital experiences for some big brands.

The lessons we learned then still hold true today:

1. Know Your Market. Research is non-negotiable.

  • What does your competitive landscape look like?
  • What are people saying about your school?
  • What are your audience’s hopes, dreams, and priorities?

2. Speak Their Language. People need to see themselves—and their aspirations—in your messaging.

3. Stay Consistent. Build on what resonates.

  • Use stories and messages derived from insights that spark curiosity and build trust.
  • Consistency creates momentum and lift, encouraging more families to take the next step—visiting your site, your campus, and eventually enrolling.

Build a Website That Works—and Lasts

A great website starts with purpose, as with all things great.

  • Understand your audience and their needs (point 1).
  • Craft an authentic messaging system that speaks to their aspirations (point 2).
  • Deliver it consistently across all channels, including WOM, your most powerful tool (point 3).

When form follows function, your website becomes not just an updated digital brochure, but a dynamic platform that inspires action.

Start With the Right Questions

Before you begin your next website redesign, marketing campaign, or enrollment initiative, discover the answers to these three foundational questions:

  1. What’s the landscape?
  2. What’s the story?
  3. What’s your story?

This work isn’t something you have to tackle alone. With the right partner, you can turn these questions into answers—and those answers into a website that works harder, smarter, and longer for your school.
